Ostara

Ostara is the celebration observed by Modern Pagans during the Spring Equinox. This equinox marks a period of growth and the planting of seeds! With winter fading, all beings (including plants and creatures) can bask in the warm sunshine! During this period, Wiccans don new garments, ignite bonfires (particularly at dawn), conduct rituals for fresh starts and gratitude, and offer gifts to the Spring Goddess known as Ostara, a deity from Germanic traditions.

The Maiden Stage

Ostara signifies the Goddess in her maiden stage: brimming with possibilities, highly fertile, eager for growth, and poised for rebirth. The Maiden aspect of the Goddess symbolizes the purity and innocence associated with childhood. This phase embodies the ambitions and aspirations that a woman yearns to follow.

During her journey, the Maiden can become quite self-focused, with all her energy dedicated solely to her aspirations. Historically, the Maiden’s intense focus delayed her arrival after the long, cold winter; this almost led to the demise of a small bird. However, she managed to rescue the creature by warming it up and transforming it into a rabbit!

The Maiden encourages you to reconnect with the magical child within. This is a moment to be inspired by the vibrant growth around you! It’s an opportunity to revisit forgotten dreams and consider the chance to follow them, while also reflecting on whether your aspirations have become so self-centered that you neglect those around you. Pursue your dreams, but ensure you do not compromise the feelings or safety of your loved ones in the process.

Altar Decoration

To honor Ostara, adorn your altar with representations of fertility and circular objects such as a basket filled with eggs, rabbits, lambs, a chalice, and a cauldron. The color palette includes yellow, purple, pink, blue, green, white, and pastel shades. You may incorporate figurines of deities or items featuring sun and moon symbols. For gemstones, consider using aquamarine, moonstone, and rose quartz.
