A handfasting ceremony symbolizes engagement for Pagans and Wiccans. This tradition dates back to Celtic times, where two individuals declare a binding union for a year and a day. It was seen as a trial marriage, allowing couples to see if they could endure a full marriage together. Today, however, handfasting has evolved into an integral part of the modern pagan wedding ceremony.
This is a truly magical moment, and while it’s hard to go wrong, there are ways to enhance the experience and make it even more romantic. Here are some suggestions to elevate your handfasting ceremony:
Plan well in advance
Host it in nature
A handfasting ceremony held outdoors is often favored by Wiccans. Why is this? Being surrounded by nature enhances the experience, allowing you to start a bonfire, form a drum circle, dance, and perform rituals more freely.
Ensure there is sufficient space to create a large circle.
Holding the ceremony outdoors makes it easier to form a circle, as indoor spaces can feel restrictive. Everyone you invite should be part of the circle.
Compose your own vows
Creating custom vows adds a personal element to the ceremony. Here is a sample vow:
“I, _____, take you, ___, in marriage,
To be my life partner,
To walk, run, and dance this new path together,
To love, care and share,
To let the winds dance between us,
Let the fires burn within us,
And the waters flow through us,
On our sacred journey together.
On this day may a new consciousness begin,
On this day I thee wed,
With my hearts’ faithful affections,
And my love to you forever.”

Select the cords for use
Cords are preferred over ribbons as they are easier to manage. The more cords you have, the better, as each cord represents something significant:
- Red: strength and courage, good health, prosperity, and longevity.
- Orange: open hearts, sensitivity, and understanding.
- Yellow: enthusiasm, spontaneity, and equality.
- Green: compassion, affection, and caring.
- Light Blue: sincerity, ease of expression, and honesty.
- Purple: clear vision and wisdom, peace, and harmony.
- Gold: unity, divine blessing, and presence.

Practice the ceremony
Rehearsing the entire handfasting is crucial, starting with the celebrant calling the attendants by name. Walk through every step, including when the attendant picks up the cord, returns to the altar, ties the couple’s hands, and goes back to their place in the bridal party.
Lastly, remember not to use your handfasting ceremony as a platform to come out to family and friends. On the day of the ceremony, aim for a positive atmosphere with no shocking revelations or negativity that could cloud your union.
