Every religion has its own set of essential tools, typically used in ceremonies to assist practitioners on their spiritual paths. For example, Buddhists utilize bells, while Christians have the cross. Although not mandatory for every follower, these items enhance commitment to one’s faith.
In witchcraft, a variety of tools is available, most of which are set on an altar and nearly always symbolize an element.
The items you choose to acquire will largely depend on your beliefs and comfort. It’s also crucial to treat your tools with respect and reverence, as they represent divine elements.
Here are some tools a witch may keep at their altar or on hand:
Athame
An Athame is a knife characterized by a black handle, used primarily to cast a circle. It should never be employed for cutting or harming others. The athame signifies masculine energy and the element of fire.
Chalice
The chalice can take many forms, such as goblets or ordinary cups, and is utilized to hold water or wine, consumed after rituals. This tool also symbolizes water on your altar.
Wand
Your wand can be crafted from any material that resonates with you, be it wood, bone, or metal. A witch’s wand is deeply personal; many Wiccans opt to create their own wand that reflects their individuality. The wand is employed to channel energies during rituals and signifies the element of air.
Pentacle
The pentacle is a potent and protective emblem in Wicca. It can be featured on an altar as either a pendant or a plate. This symbol stands for earth and is used to purify yourself and your surroundings as well as the items on your altar. If you possess a pentacle necklace, you may also use it on your altar.
Cauldron
Similar to the chalice, the cauldron denotes the element of water. It can hold materials like water, herbs, incense, and candles, making it useful for rituals involving fire. Cast iron is the preferred material for cauldrons, as it can withstand high temperatures without cracking.
Bells
Bells serve to mark transitions in rituals. It’s common to find spells requiring you to ring a bell at specific intervals, designating both the start and conclusion of a ritual.
Candles
Candles embody the element of fire. Two candles also symbolize the God and the Goddess.
Bowls
A bowl on your altar signifies the element of earth. It can hold water, sea salt, and oils. It’s important to include a bowl for sea salt, as it can cleanse your other magical tools and any possessions that may carry negative energy.
Incense
Incense represents the element of air, used to clear energies, facilitate cleansing, and summon new energies.
Crystals
Each crystal possesses its own unique energy. Crystals can amplify the power of your spells, and having an assortment on your altar will aid in various rituals.
Broom
A broom symbolizes the act of sweeping away negative and unwanted energies from your space.
Many more tools exist in witchcraft to enrich your spiritual experience and magical practice. The list provided outlines just the key essentials, and you can expand upon them as your journey unfolds.
Before employing each tool, it’s essential to clear and cleanse it. Always treat each tool with respect. Remember that when the God and Goddess shaped the world, they infused pieces of themselves into everything around us.

For example, did you know that one of the most common questions we get here at The Moonlight Shop
is:
“Which Pentacle would be best for me” or “Please help me choose the best Pentacle for my (insert family member here)”.
And I totally get why it can be hard to choose. Afterall, a good Pentacle will be around for more or less the rest of your life… and maybe even longer.
So to help you out, here’s some things to consider, to help you choose the right Pentacle for YOU:
Design:
You can get everything from VERY plain pentacles, like The Pentacle of Ancestors to one with more symbolism like The Pentacle of the Moon or The Spell Casters Pendant .
As a general rule, find a design that speaks to you and help express who YOU are a person.
Afterall, you’ll be wearing your new Pentacle a lot, so you might as well get one you like to look at.
Personally, I LOVE symbolism, so The Brooms of Elder is one of my all time favorites.
Crystals:
Crystals can really help enhance the powers of the Pentacle. It also keep the Pentacle fashionable and awesome too look at.
You can get pentacles with very few birth crystals and others with many more. For example The Pentacle of the Witch (which have 5 crystals).
It’s a common misconception that you can only wear Jewelry with your own birthstones.
That’s not true!
It’s correct that you’ll often get the most benefit from wearing your own birth-crystals, but that doesn’t mean you won’t reap the benefits of wearing other crystals as well.
If you have trouble keeping calm, you would benefit from wearing a Pentacle with Amethyst crystals (even if you are not born in February).
The thing to remember when it comes to birth-crystal pentacles is that they are best to help you with specific struggles. Take the Pentacle of the Black Onyx for example… it’s a really nice and powerful Pentacle, but it’s true powers lie in how it helps shield you from negative energy.
Animals (and other protectors):
Some pentacles are tied closely together with specific symbols and the entire design revolves around achieving a specific outcome or connecting to a specific type of protectors.
Usually, these are not “all-round” pentacles, but more meant to be used for specific purposes..
For example, ” The New Beginnings Necklace ” is designed specifically to help you when you are starting on a new path in life. But it also has the Pentacle, to offer you protection (you are often vulnerable when starting something new).
The Draconian Pentacle on the other hand, is made especially for helping you connect with your Dragon Guardian.
These kinds of Pentacles are the best of two worlds. A compromise if you will. They usually won’t work as good when doing magick and rituals that’s not related to the specific outcome it’s designed for.
My personal recommendations:
There are so many different Pentacles to choose from that it can be a little overwhelming.
Take your time. Read about the different Pentacles and take your time. Don’t rush it, but listen to your gut feeling.
Remember that even though buying a Pentacle can be a big decision, you cannot really go wrong.
Each Pentacle has its own strengths and chances are that you will end up owning more than one (if you don’t already).
With time, you will know exactly what each of your Pentacles are good for.

You know , sometimes you just cannot wear a pentacle.
Maybe you are going some place where lots uninformed people hang out and you just know that wearing a pentacle would cause a trouble…
…or maybe you are just not “in the mood” to explain that “no, I don’t worship Satan and NO I don’t eat children for breakfast” for the 117th time.
What to do?
Luckily, you don’t have to go out “naked” and without a pendant.
You could wear something with a “hidden” pentacle. For example, the Brooms of Elder pendant . It’s still a Pentacle, but most people won’t even realize that.
Another option is to wear something completely different. The Solstice solar cross is a good example.
It’ll empower you and if you get it with the Black Onyx Crystal, it will also offer protection from negative emotions (like from those sorry people who think being Wiccan is all about eating frog eyes and burning down churches).
You could also go for something like The triple moon of the goddess pendant , which is very fashionable, while still offering protection from the Goddess.
Expect to get a lot of comments though. It is a really nice pendant.
