How to Get Started with Rune Stones (A Guide)

A while ago, we received some stunning rune stones in our shop.

Last week, I grabbed a bag and began experimenting with some basic spreads.

I must confess that rune divination has never been my forte. I’ve always leaned more towards tarot cards…

…but this experience has COMPLETELY transformed my perspective on rune stones!

So, if you also feel a bit apprehensive about using rune stones, I’m here to assist you.

Casting with runes is actually quite simple, and I have A REALLY EASY spread for you to start using immediately…

I’ll do my best to explain, even though it may be a tad tricky.

The 5 Stone Rune Casting Method

Before anything else, pose a question. Make it more complex than just a yes or no; think slightly deeper…

For instance: “What could happen in the next 1-3 months if I choose this path?” or “How will my connection with Mr. X evolve if we make these changes?”…

You’ll need 5 stones (of course) and arrange them in a cross shape. Like this:

Draw the stones randomly from your Rune Stones bag and set them down on the table. Initially, place them all face up, so the runes are visible (later on, as you gain experience, you can explore the meaning of reversed runes too).

THE ARRANGEMENT IS CRUCIAL! So avoid placing them randomly.

Black Onyx Runes of Wisdom and Truth from the Moonlight Shop

Begin with one stone in the center, followed by one to the left, then one beneath it, and so on (just as shown in the image above).

Stone #1 represents your current issue or mental state. If the stone appears negative or confusing, it might signal that you’re not focused at the moment (e.g., your mind is scattered) or that you’re experiencing significant stress… Either way, take a moment to lay down or meditate for five minutes and try again (with a NEW spread).

Next, stone #2 reflects the past. It highlights what you have experienced and how it has led to your present circumstances.

Stone #3 will indicate what you need to confront. This may involve seeking assistance from others or from your deities. If this stone is negative, it suggests an obstacle to overcome.

Rune stone #4 reveals what you must learn to accept. Sometimes there are situations beyond your control. Just accept that for now…

Finally, stone #5 reveals what awaits you after you have addressed the issues indicated by stone #3 and accepted those from stone #4…

Remember, this is a forecast, a reflection of possibilities. It doesn’t dictate how it WILL be. Your actions and how you respond to the stones’ guidance determine the outcome.

Also…

…mastering this skill takes time, so be patient.

If you find this interesting, consider researching more. I’m not an authority on the subject; I simply wanted to share my thoughts with you 🙂

If you don’t own rune stones yet or are searching for a nice set, you should definitely check these out: http://themoonlightshop.com/products/elder-futhark-jasper-rune-stones

These stones are crafted from red Jasper, which is wonderful to work with. They have an ultra-smooth finish and feel lovely in your hand.

You will receive a total of 25 rune stones: 24 Elder Futhark Runes and 1 blank. Some prefer using the blank for destiny purposes. Personally, I keep it handy in case I misplace one of the other stones…

The set also comes in a beautiful bag, making it easy to carry or store securely.

Another great aspect is that each set is one-of-a-kind. Since the runes are created from REAL stones, no two sets are identical. Pretty neat, right?

Oh, I almost forgot! I’ve designed a really simple PDF that summarizes the meanings of the stones, based on the Elder Futhark runic alphabet, just like the stones in our shop. I often use it myself, but I thought it might be helpful for you too 🙂

  1. Is there by chance a way you could do an article on Oracle cards? I have an awesome set of Oracle cards and I love them. I figured this could be a way to tell new Wiccans the difference and similarities between Tarot and Oracle cards.

  2. Thank you for the info! I just in the last month suddenly became interested in Runes. I’m 56, and BAM! It’s just called to me. I love working with crystals, so I guess this was just the next step. Anyway, I appreciate you taking time too post this because I have no clue where to start. Haven’t even bought a set yet. The jasper appeals to me. Thanks again!
